Overview
Hardware wallets (Trezor, Ledger) protect crypto by keeping private keys off the internet. This guide covers:
- Unboxing and initial checks
- Trezor setup (Trezor Suite / webflow)
- Ledger Live download & pairing notes
- Security best practices & troubleshooting
Trezor — Quick setup (Model One / Model T)
Step 1 — Verify packaging & device
Buy only from authorized retailers. Inspect tamper seals and that the device is not previously initialized.
Step 2 — Visit the official start page
Open your computer and navigate to the official Trezor start portal to ensure you use the authentic setup flow.
Step 3 — Install Trezor Suite & connect
- Download or open Trezor Suite (desktop or web) per the official instructions.
- Connect the device via the supplied cable and follow on-screen prompts.
- Create a new wallet: choose a PIN on-device, write down your recovery seed on the provided card (never store it digitally).
Important: recovery seed & firmware
Never share your 12/24-word recovery seed. Only input your seed on the device during official recovery — never into apps or websites.
Optional: Updating firmware
When prompted by Trezor Suite, update firmware using the official flow. Firmware updates patch security issues — follow on-device confirmations exactly.
Ledger Live — download & pairing notes
Download & install
Ledger’s desktop app, Ledger Live, must be downloaded from Ledger’s official site. Install and run Ledger Live, then follow the "Get started" guide to initialize or pair a Ledger device.
Pairing considerations
- If you already use Trezor, note that Trezor and Ledger are different ecosystems — you cannot 'pair' a Trezor with Ledger Live, but you can manage distinct hardware wallets in their respective official apps or through compatible third-party wallets.
- Always verify the app signature or download checksum when provided to avoid fake apps.
Security best practices
Never share your seed
Any prompt (email, app, website, or message) asking for your seed phrase is a scam. Hardware wallets never require you to type the recovery seed into a computer.
Use official downloads only
Always download Trezor Suite or Ledger Live from the vendor’s official domain or verified app stores. Confirm the domain and certificate in the browser when installing software.
Backups & storage
Keep the recovery seed physically secure (fireproof safe, safety deposit box) and consider redundancy with split backups if needed. Use passphrase feature only if you understand the operational trade-offs.
Troubleshooting & Tips
- If the device is not detected, try a different cable or USB port and avoid USB hubs during initial setup.
- If prompted for a seed on a desktop app: disconnect immediately and verify you are on the official site / app.
- Keep firmware and desktop apps updated, but read release notes before applying updates if you rely on third-party integrations.
When in doubt, consult the vendor official support pages listed below.
